Our Community Partnerships
This fall 2008 the Symphony of the Southwest partnered with the Child Crisis Center for music and art therapy project for select CCC children. After listening to a recent Symphony of the Southwest concert, children from the CCC painted how and what the music made them feel and see. The results were vibrant, colorful pieces of art then professionally framed and displayed at Symphony of the Southwest concerts.
A New Leaf Of Arizona is a not-for-profit organization focused on the needs of children, adults and families due to domestic violence and homeless situations since 1971 (formerly PREHAB of Arizona). Residents of A New Leaf were invited to our recent all ages Afternoon of Christmas Delights concert on December 20 at the Mesa Arts Center at no cost to them. For many families, this concert was their first ever.
Thanks to the generous underwriting of the Otto & Edna Neely Foundation, the Symphony of the Southwest again performs the 20th century narrative classic of Peter & The Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev to 7,000 Mesa Public Schools elementary children at the Chandler Center for the Arts and Higley Center for the Performing Arts. The musical and narrated tale of young Peter and the animals has delighted and educated children and adults alike as an entertaining introduction to classical music instruments and playing.
1 in 8 people in America wonder where there next meal is coming from. Symphony of the Southwest joins the American League of Orchestras and other participating orchestras throughout the U.S. in March 2009 for a canned food drive collection benefiting local food pantries. Symphony of the Southwest is sent the call to action to help bolster dwindling food supplies through patrons donating food at our March 21, 2009 concert at the Mesa Arts Center to benefit United Food Bank, based in Mesa. We are pleased to report our patrons donated 558 pounds of food, which translated into 436 people who were served a meal through their generosity.
We are very proud of our community collaborations and look forward to continuing our partnerships with community arts and humanitarian-based non-profits.
