About the musicians and the music. . .
Our String Quartet features active members of the Symphony of the Southwest.
Dr. Beth Youngblood is Concertmaster of the SSW, and is also an accomplished solo artist, having performed with several other orchestras across the USA. She has also performed locally and internationally with Urban Electra.
Larry Dunn is an attorney as well as a violinist, and serves as the Principal of the 2nd Violin section.
Dr. Jeffry Norman is the Principal Violist of the SSW and President of the Arizona Viola Society.
Therese Cudmore, Cellist, has played with the Symphony for several years and also performs with the Encore Quartet.
Together these musicians bring an expert interpretation of selected works by Mozart and Mendelssohn.
String Quartet in D Major, K.499 was written in Vienna by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It was dedicated to a friend, Franz Anton Hoffmeister. This work, considered by many to be Mozart’s finest Quartet, is emotional and complex across four elegant movements.
String Quartet No. 4, Op. 44 No. 2 by Felix Mendelssohn was written on the composer’s honeymoon. Clearly influenced by the works of Haydn and Mozart, this Quartet evokes themes that can be heard in many of his other works. Both compositions are a joy to listen to – and we hope you share that joy as well.
